چکیده

This study examined the effect on gait of degrading visual input by simulation on a course with obstacles. Thirty healthy, young adult males walked on a 6 m path with three obstacles (height: 5, 10, 20 cm, width: 10 cm) set at intervals of 150 cm with and without degraded visual input from light-scattering goggles. Gait was examined with respect to time, length, angle and walk speed parameters. Gait changed significantly in the degraded visual input condition. The distances between the obstacles and foot before the obstacles were significantly larger in 10 and 20 cm obstacles under the degraded visual input condition, but distances after passing the obstacle had no significant difference among obstacle height. We therefore conclude that a decrease of visual function alters the perception of an obstacle’s height, particularly the 5 cm height obstacle.

Visual exteroceptive information provided during obstacle crossing did not modify the lower limb trajectory.

The roles of visual exteroception (information regarding environmental characteristics) and exproprioception (the relation of body segments to the environment) during gait adaptation are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to determine how visual exteroception regarding obstacle characteristics provided during obstacle crossing modified foot elevation and placement with and with...

The effect of the visual characteristics of obstacles on risk of tripping and gait parameters during locomotion.

PURPOSE Injuries from falls are a serious health issue. Approaches to preventing falls should consider increasing relevant visual information of an obstacle. Obstacle parameters, such as position and height, may be specified by the visible structure of an obstacle. The present study examined the relationship between visible structure of an obstacle and locomotor behaviour. This relationship may...

Believable Visual Feedback in Motor Learning Using Occlusion-based Clipping in Video Mapping

Gait rehabilitation systems provide patients with guidance and feedback that assist them to better perform the rehabilitation tasks. Real-time feedback can guide users to correct their movements. Research has shown that the quality of feedback is crucial to enhance motor learning in physical rehabilitation. Common feedback systems based on virtual reality present interactive feedback in a monit...

Image Contrast and Visual Acuity Through Night Vision Goggles

Night vision goggles (NVGs) intensify ambient illumination making it possible to see in the dark despite insufficient light for normal vision. NVGs are used for military and civilian operations, and as visual aids for night blindness. The quality and quantity of vision achieved through NVGs depends on several factors including the intensity of ambient radiation, the integrity of NVG electro-opt...

Night Vision Imaging System Lighting Compatibility Assessment Methodology

Aircraft cockpit lighting can interfere with the proper operation of night vision goggles (NVGs). Methods to verify compatibility between cockpit lighting and NVGs involve expensive equipment. An inexpensive alternative method to assess compatibility, that provides the same quality of results, is needed. Since the quality of the existing lighting compatibility methods has not been studied, it w...
